Part drawings and purchase orders should clearly identify the coating process whenever it has already been specified. Depending on the application, a manufacturer may require powder coating, e-coating, liquid coating, CARC, or another finish.

If the process has not yet been selected, provide the coating partner with as much information as possible about the part, substrate, end use, operating environment, appearance requirements, and expected performance. Those details can help determine which coating system is appropriate for the application.

Include Coating Thickness and Critical Tolerances

Coating adds measurable thickness to a metal component. On precision parts, that additional material can affect threaded areas, mating surfaces, holes, bearing locations, electrical contact points, and other features where tolerances matter.

A statement such as “black powder coat” may not provide enough information for a repeat manufacturing program. If appearance matters, specifications should include the appropriate color standard or approved sample along with gloss, texture, and other finish expectations.

This becomes especially important for visible components and products requiring a Class A appearance. Consistent documentation gives the coating supplier a defined target and helps manufacturers maintain a more uniform appearance from one production run to the next.

Define Surface Preparation and Performance Requirements

The finished coating is only as effective as the process used to prepare and coat the part. Manufacturers should communicate known requirements for cleaning, pretreatment, corrosion resistance, adhesion, durability, or environmental exposure. When appropriate, surface preparation and sandblasting may be part of the finishing process.

Performance expectations are particularly important when components will be exposed to moisture, abrasion, chemicals, road conditions, outdoor environments, or other demanding service conditions.

Do Not Overlook Handling, Packaging and Production Details

Coating specifications can also address what happens after the finish is applied. If coated surfaces require special handling, protective packaging, rack orientation, or other considerations before assembly or shipment, those requirements should be communicated early.

Manufacturers should also provide expected quantities, production frequency, part revisions, and scheduling needs. A coating requirement that works well for a prototype must also be practical and repeatable when production volume increases.
